Stranger Things’ Scoops Troop’s newest cast member, Maya Hawke AKA Robin, is being slammed by fans for nepotism. In a Variety interview, Maya claims she hasn’t benefited from it, but fans think otherwise.

Yep.

So, who are Maya’s parents?

Well, Maya’s father is Ethan Hawke, an American director, writer and actor. Maya’s mother is Uma Thurman, an American actress and model.

Here’s a gist of her father: He’s been nominated for 4 Oscars and a Tony Award. His most notable films of this decade include starring in the Before trilogy (all critically acclaimed) as Jesse Wallace, The Purge (2013) as James Sandin and First Reformed as Pastor Ernst Toller.

Here’s a gist of her mother: She’s widely known for being Quentin Tarantino’s muse. (Quentin Tarantino is a famous director).

Her most notable films of the last two decades include Batman & Robin (1997) as Dr. Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy, Les Misérables (1998) as Fantine and Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010) as Medusa.

In fact, Maya’s parents have both been very active in the film industry ever since 1985, and they’re still active even now. And this means their names go a long way for Maya and her career.

So, what’s the exact controversy?

Well, when it was revealed that Maya landed a role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), a movie that has a cast of A list celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie…

…Fans quickly called her out for nepotism. What’s nepotism? Basically favouring someone over someone else due to their family’s influence.

In Maya’s case, fans are saying that she got the role because she has famous parents and good connections.

And it’s even more suspicious because the director is Quentin Tarantino, which we already mentioned is someone who thinks of Maya’s mother as his muse.

Quentin Tarantino facts: Won 2 Oscars, 2 Golden Globe Awards and 2 BAFTA Awards. On the Time 100 list for the “world’s most influential people”, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as “one of the most celebrated filmmakers of his generation.”

So it seems like in this case, nepotism did help Maya.

But nepotism is common in the entertainment industry. It’s the fact that Maya denied there was any nepotism involved that fans have an issue with. In an interview with Variety, Maya said:

“I just auditioned, like everybody else. […] I just kind of went through the process like everybody else and maybe at the end, I got an extra tight hug and a wink from Quentin but, I went through it like everyone else.”

Anyway, this is what fans had to say when they found out about Maya’s role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood:

Even now, her father often promotes Maya’s work through his social media. In an Instagram post, Ethan Hawke wrote:

“Some of you may have missed her in last year’s BBC production of Little Women. Some of you may have missed her work at Juilliard. I know many missed out on numerous high school productions — heck I even missed a few and I’m her father. Some of you may know her music, some may not. But Ladies & Gentleman, get to know MAYA HAWKE. She’s the real thing. #StrangerThings

And he has a pretty decent reach because even celebrities commented on his post. Check it out below:

“She sure is!!!!!!!!!! AMAZING!!!⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️” – Andy Cohen, TV Personality, Talk Show Host of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen

“She’s INCREDIBLE” – Sophie Turner, Game of Thrones

Yes, she is! ” – Laura Linney, The Truman Show

However, some fans are defending Maya by saying that she’s an excellent actress in her own right.
